Looking at the History of Portsmouth Virginia

Portsmouth celebrated 250 years of existence in 2002. It was established as a town in 1752 and it comprised just 65 acres of land. It was situated on the banks of the Elizabeth River. William Crawford was the founder of Portsmouth, who was wealthy ship owner and merchant. He held various important roles in the community, including presiding court judge in Norfolk County, militia lieutenant colonel, high sheriff and representative to the House of Burgesses. Due to the fact that he served in the militia, William Crawford is often referred to as "Colonel Crawford."

The 65 acres that comprised what is now Portsmouth all belonged to Colonel Crawford, where he had a plantation. Later, the General Assembly of Virginia constituted it as a town. It took the name of British Portsmouth, an important naval town. The streets often held names that refer to the English heritage. It separated from county government and became a fully independent city in 1858, by which time it already had a very rich history. It is a deep water port on the East Coast, and this is what has made it possible for Portsmouth to have such significant growth over the past few hundred years.

Things to Do in Portsmouth

Unsurprisingly, for a town with such a long and rich history, many of Portsmouth's biggest attractions have something to do with the history of the maritime industry. People are proud of their heritage and the history of their city. For instance, you can take part in an Old Town walk, where you can enjoy the beautiful architecture of the old properties that are still there. Many of these properties have been very well maintained and are a true delight to look at. Stroll through this area whenever you like, but make sure you take part in at least one guided tour, so you get to learn more about what you are actually seeing.

Then, there are the Courthouse Galleries. This is an art gallery situated in the old courthouse and it is absolutely stunning. Even if you are not a lover of arts, the building is amazing and the gardens are not to be missed. Furthermore, the Galleries always have activities for younger people, so this is really something to enjoy for the entire family. There are also a lot of information available here about the history of Portsmouth, as well as about the various other things you can when you are here. This is a great stop, in other words, even if it is just to figure out what to do with the rest of your day.

Then, there is the Naval Shipyard Museum, which is another hugely important piece of history. Portsmouth, as much of this part of Virginia, saw its riches coming from the naval industry. This was highly influential during the two world wars, but it continues to be an important industry to this day. At the museum, you will learn about the ship building industry, but also about the role ships have played in the development of the world and in the various wars.

You can also go off the beaten track in Portsmouth. Make sure that you visit the Great Dismal Swamp at least once. You are bound to love it and come back again and again. There are lots of different hiking trails, with the most popular one being the Ditch Trail. This is because you can see most of the swamp without actually getting your feet wet. There is also quite a bit of interesting wildlife in the swamp and trying to spot some on your way to Lake Drummond, deep in the middle of the swamp, is a great activity.

As you can see, moving to Portsmouth isn't an ordeal but rather an exciting adventure. Spend some time researching the best movers Portsmouth Virginia has to offer. They will generally also be able to give you great hints and tips on where to go and be entertained.
