A house move is exciting, but also very hectic. And it should be pointed out that it is not only the moving company that you need to contact. One of the things we often forget to think about is our utility services. You must think about your gas, electric, water and telephone services. This takes time and there are different options available. The most important thing, however, is that you plan ahead when you are moving.
Before you actually move, you need to get in touch with the utility companies that service the area where you are moving to. Make an appointment so that they can set your service up. There are generally guidelines in terms of how soon they should be able to provide you with the service. Do remember that the installation and inspection programs are going to be different for each utility. This is why you need to make sure that you arrange these as soon as possible, as you don't want to move into a property only to find you have water but no electricity. You may already have an electric meter in your new property, which means you should only need a week to get it set up. However, if there is no meter, your utility company will likely need at least a month to set you up. This is also because they will need to test the meter before they can supply you with electric power. In terms of natural gas, one week is generally enough for your new service to be set up. For your telephone service, allot at least two weeks, although a month is generally better. This is because telephone lines require a lot of testing and adjustments and they are not guaranteed to work straightaway. Water can be supplied by various organizations, such as your county, municipality, for profit company, cooperative and so on. These all have different requirements in terms of when you need to tell them that you will be moving in and how long it will take to get you set up.
Generally speaking, you can start contacting all your new utility services online or over the telephone. You will need to have all the important information, such as your identification documents, address details, social security number, employment information and more ready. Don't forget to call your existing companies before you move to tell them that you are moving. Do a price comparison online first to see where the best deals are, and don't assume that simply transferring your account to a new address will be sufficient. Your old company, whether you are staying with them or not, will require meter readings for your gas and electricity and possibly also your water.
